Spirits of the Afterlife
Northern Frost cooperates several kinds of spirits into the rp. The names of the spirits are Inuit but are not directly based off of any religion, culture, or belief's and are completely original to NF.
Issumatar - The Issumatar are the overlords of the spirit world. There are only three which are known each symbolizing a different celestial body, Adlartok(sun), Aningan(moon),and Ublureak(star). They each play an important role in pack life. Adlartok is in charge of bonds between wolves, Aningan is in charge of delivering spirit totems to earth, and Ublureak is in charge of guidance. All three can take on any form they desire however normally remain dormant as celestial bodies in the sky. These are the spirits which the special totems are based off. Information of special totems is available in the next post.
Tomkin - These are the main group of spirits in which an animal will become upon entering the afterlife. Some may become totem spirits at some point, if necessary. The appearance is the same as the Totem spirits, except their eyes remain the color they were in life. These spirits will not be featured as characters in the rp, but may be mentioned in dialogue.
Totems - These are the spirits who are sent to watch over a specific pack member of Northern Frost, and have existed since the Issumatar decided to gift the pack a spirit guardian as a reward for their kindness and loyalty. They can be any animal from the list of totems above, though as spirits have distinct differences in appearance than those living. They are usually a good deal smaller in size, depending on the species. The largest spirits are approximately half the size of a wolf and can be any solid color. Their eyes are always pure white, glowing, and pupilless. All members of NF are able to roleplay one totem spirit who guards their character if they have gained one.
Tonraq - These are either animals who have died rather unexpectedly and have yet to complete their life purpose, or those who the Issumatar spirits don't feel are ready to enter the spirit realm. In this case, the animal will awaken somewhere with no memory of their previous life. They are usually always pure white with blue eyes. They will remain in this life until their purpose has been completed and then enter the spirit realm. Toraq can be rp'd with special permission from the staff, however, are rare to get.
Tonrar - Tonrar are the spirits of the corrupt. They live in a forbidden corner of the spirit realm which is shrouded in darkness. They can sometimes escape into the mortal realm, however, it is only a matter of time until they are sucked back into where they came from. When they do enter the mortal realm, they usually try to wreck havoc amongst the living. In some unlucky circumstances, a tonrar may try to convince a pup or apprentice to take them as a guardian spirit. If the deal is made, the tonrar will become their guardian spirit and are able to stay in the mortal realm to cause even more chaos. They look like totem and tomkin spirits, except for glowing eyes which are usually red in color.
The Totem Spirits
Totem spirits are important to the structure of pack life. They serve as guidance, as well as a reminder of their past. Northern Frost has several ways of honoring the spirits, including festivals and abiding to certain laws. Each wolf of the pack has guardian spirit unique to them, this is known as their totem.
Their story goes way back to before the founding of Northern Frost when all of the creatures of the Northern valley lived in an aura of subtle harmony. Mostly every creature understood and respected the balance of nature. They knew that every life form had their own talents and traits, and a unique destiny all their own.
The humans honored this and built statues of many different animals, each representing something different. These became known as the totems. Little did they know that these totems came with a great amount of power, and they served as a portal between the mortal realm and the afterlife. Every once in awhile, a spirit would come through one of these portals and help guide the living through troublesome times. The totems became a mark of the harmony the valley served for many years. Though over time the humans changed. They had forgotten their special connection with nature, and in the end destroyed the land.
With not enough resources to sustain them, the animals were forced to retreat elsewhere. This is when a wolf by the name of Blue gathered others of her kind to find a new home. This was the beginning of Northern Frost, and today the pack seems to be the only ones to remember the totems and the spirits. For generations, they continued to honor these spirits. Eventually, the spirits recognized the packs efforts and came down to form a bond with them. Each wolf from then on would receive a spirit guardian, which soon became known as totems, after the structures that had originally connected the mortal world with the spirits. These totems would help guide the wolves throughout their life until they passed on and joined the spirit realm.
Once an apprentice has reached one year of age, they are not only given a rank but also their totem. Which totem each wolf receives is determined by one or more of the Issumatar, it is based on the wolf's personality, strengths, and weaknesses. During the coming of age ceremony known as spirit awakening, a wolf is given a mark somewhere on their body in the shape of their spirit animal. This is called a 'spirit marking.' From that point on the wolf will find they have a special connection with the spirits of that animal.
Once a wolf receives their totem, a guardian spirit will come to greet them. This guardian spirit will remain a partner for life, guiding the wolf through challenges large and small. Once the time has come, they will also help aid the wolf in their transition to the afterlife. Each spirit totem represents something different. Though a wolf cannot normally communicate verbally with their spirit totems, they will be able to visually see them. Each totem has a different personality and different ways to guide wolves. They will attempt to communicate through signs, and it is up to the wolf to decipher what such signs mean.
